Why your rankings look different from your customer's
Local results are personalised by the searcher's exact location and history, so there is no single ranking to check. Position only means something when tied to a specific place, which is why self-checking misleads.
Almost every local search argument between an owner and their marketer comes from this: both are looking at real results, and both are seeing something different. Neither is wrong, and the disagreement is unresolvable until measurement is defined properly.
Proximity changes results street by street
Map-pack results are recalculated against wherever the searcher stands. The same query returns different businesses on opposite sides of the same suburb, so a citywide position is an average that describes nobody's actual experience.
Your own history distorts what you see
You search your own business, visit your own listing and click your own site constantly. That behaviour raises your business in your own results specifically, which is why owners routinely believe they rank better than they do.
Incognito does not solve it
A private window removes account history but not location, which is the larger factor by far. Checking from the office still measures the one place your business is nearly guaranteed to look strong.
Measure from where customers actually search
Useful tracking samples positions from multiple specific locations across the area you serve and reports them separately. A single number, however carefully produced, hides the variation that decides whether the phone rings.
Common questions
- Is there one true ranking for a keyword?
- No, not for local searches. There is a distribution of positions across locations, and any single figure is a summary of that distribution rather than a fact about your business.
- Why does a report differ from what I see?
- Because it is probably sampling from locations across your service area rather than from your office. That is the more useful measurement, even when it is less flattering than your own screen.
- How often should positions be checked?
- Frequently enough to see trend rather than noise. Daily figures fluctuate for reasons that have nothing to do with your work, and reacting to them wastes effort.
