Google Business Profile optimization for contractors
Categories, services and service areas carry the most ranking weight on a contractor's profile. Description and posts help conversion once a customer is looking at you, but move rankings very little.
Most contractors complete a Business Profile once, during setup, and never revisit it. That leaves the highest-leverage local ranking asset available to a trade business sitting at perhaps forty percent complete while competitors who filled it in properly quietly take the calls.
Primary category is the single biggest lever
The primary category shapes which searches you are eligible for more than any other field. A plumber categorised as a general contractor is competing in the wrong set entirely, and no amount of other work compensates for it.
List services individually
Services are a structured field and each entry creates an association with the searches that match it. A profile listing twenty specific services is legible to Google in a way that a profile listing three generic ones is not.
Set the service area honestly
Claiming an implausibly large service area does not extend your reach and can undermine the listing. Distance is still measured from your actual location, so an inflated radius adds nothing while making the profile look less credible.
Photos and hours affect conversion, not ranking
They matter, but for a different reason. A profile with real job photography and accurate hours converts more of the people who already found it, which is worth doing without expecting it to change position.
Common questions
- How many categories should a contractor use?
- One precise primary category, plus only the secondary categories that genuinely describe work you do. Adding loosely related categories dilutes relevance rather than broadening reach.
- Do Google Posts help rankings?
- There is little evidence they move position meaningfully. They occupy space on your listing and can influence someone already reading it, which is a conversion benefit rather than a ranking one.
- Should the profile be updated seasonally?
- For trades with strong seasonality, yes. Ensuring the services you want work for right now are listed and prominent costs minutes and aligns the profile with the demand actually arriving.
