How service area businesses rank without a storefront

A service-area business can rank fully in the map pack, but distance is still measured from its registered address even when that address is hidden. Coverage is therefore narrower than the service area you advertise.

Most trades run from a home address or a yard rather than a shopfront customers visit, which makes them service-area businesses. The rules for these listings are widely misunderstood, and the misunderstanding usually costs coverage.

Hidden does not mean ignored

Hiding the address removes it from public display but Google still holds it and still measures proximity from it. A listing registered at the edge of a metro area competes weakly at the far side no matter how the service area is drawn.

The service area is not a ranking radius

The service area field tells customers where you work. It does not extend the distance over which you can rank, which is the single most common misconception among owners in this position.

Competing beyond your radius

Where proximity works against you, relevance and prominence have to carry more weight, supported by genuinely local content for those areas. This is slower and harder than ranking near your base, and pretending otherwise sets up a disappointment.

Rules that get listings suspended

Virtual offices, mailbox addresses and co-working addresses used purely for coverage are common causes of suspension. The gain is temporary and the loss is the listing itself.

Questions

Common questions

Can a second location be registered to cover another city?
Only if it is a genuine, staffed location meeting the eligibility rules. Registering an address you do not really operate from is the fastest route to suspension and takes the original listing's standing with it.
Is a home address safe to use?
Yes, and it can be hidden from public view while still serving as the proximity anchor. This is the normal and compliant arrangement for most trades.
How large should the service area be?
As large as you genuinely serve. It does not extend ranking reach, so inflating it gains nothing and makes the listing less credible to the customers who do see it.
