Local SEO keyword research for trade businesses

National search volume is close to useless for a local trade. What matters is the demand inside your service radius and the intent behind the query, and a low-volume term with emergency intent beats a high-volume term with none.

Keyword research aimed at local trades goes wrong at the first step, because the volume figures in every standard tool describe a country and you serve a radius. A term showing a hundred searches a month nationally may represent your entire addressable demand or almost none of it.

Volume is the wrong headline number

National figures cannot tell you how much of that demand falls inside your area. Two terms with identical national volume can differ enormously for you depending on how the demand is distributed geographically.

Sort by intent before volume

Emergency intent converts immediately, replacement intent converts over weeks, and informational intent may never convert directly. A low-volume emergency term is frequently worth more than a high-volume informational one.

Symptom queries are underpriced

Customers describe what is happening to them rather than naming the service they need. Symptom-led searches carry real urgency and are usually answered generically by national sites, which leaves them winnable.

Mine the questions you already answer

The questions customers ask on the phone are keyword research that has already been validated by real demand. They are also, reliably, the pages competitors have not written.

Questions

Common questions

Are keyword tools worth paying for locally?
They are useful for discovering terms and useless for sizing local demand precisely. Treat their volume figures as relative rankings between terms rather than as forecasts of your traffic.
Should 'near me' be targeted explicitly?
Not as text on the page. Those searches are resolved by location signals and profile strength rather than by the phrase appearing in your copy, and writing it repeatedly reads poorly.
How many keywords should a trade business track?
Enough to cover each service across each area you serve, which grows quickly once locations multiply. The number matters far less than tracking them per location rather than as a single average.
