How much does local SEO cost for contractors?

Local SEO is usually sold as a monthly retainer, and the price is driven by how many locations and services you need to cover. The more useful question is what is delivered each month and how it is measured.

Pricing in this market varies by an order of magnitude for work that is described identically, which makes comparison almost impossible from the outside. The variable that actually explains most of the spread is scope, and scope is what proposals are vaguest about.

What genuinely moves the price

Number of locations, number of services, competitiveness of the area, and whether content production is included. A single-location business in a small town is a fundamentally different job from a multi-branch operation in a major metro.

Retainer, project or software

Retainers buy ongoing work, projects buy a fixed piece of it, and software buys visibility into what is happening. They are not substitutes and the right mix depends on whether you have anyone able to act on what the data shows.

The reporting trap

A substantial share of local SEO retainers deliver a monthly report and very little else. The diagnostic question is simple: ask what specifically changed on the site or profile last month, and expect a specific answer.

Judging return honestly

Attribution in trades is genuinely hard because the call arrives by phone with no tracking attached. Any evaluation that cannot separate revenue you confirmed from revenue you inferred will flatter whoever produced it.

Questions

Common questions

Is cheap local SEO ever worth it?
At the lowest price points the work is usually automated directory submissions and a templated report. It rarely damages anything, and it rarely changes anything either.
How long before spending shows a return?
Six to twelve months is realistic for a domain without existing authority. Anyone promising results in weeks is describing paid advertising or is describing nothing.
Agency or software?
Software tells you what is happening and costs less; an agency does the work and costs more. The deciding factor is whether anyone on your side has time to act on the information.
